In this workshop you will learn how to use the intarsia colourwork technique to create shapes, pictures, and blocks of colour in your knitting.  

The workshop will include an introduction to the technique, how to read intarsia charts, and knitting up your own sample of intarsia using charts designed for the session inspired by Museum of the Home. We will have time to look at examples of intarsia used in garments and finished objects, and talk through the ways this technique could be used in your future knitting projects. As this workshop has a smaller group size there will be time for one-on-one guidance and advice.  

You'll leave with: 

• a solid understanding of the technique 

• a set of charts and bobbins for future projects 

• the sample you started creating 

• the confidence to start using intarsia in future projects (hopefully!)  

Materials: 

• Bring your own yarn with appropriately sized needles. 

You will need two or more contrasting colours in the same weight of yarn (DK, aran or worsted weight are recommended) 

Or 

• You can purchase yarn and needle kits on the day. We estimate a cost of £5-10 for everything you’ll need. 

This workshop is suitable for skill levels ranging from confident beginners to intermediate and advanced knitters. Requirements are that you can comfortably knit, purl and cast on. This workshop is not suitable for absolute beginners. 

This workshop is led by Echo Godfrey, who is Curatorial Officer at Museum of the Home, runs the Textiles Through Time tours, has studied both Knitwear and Textile Conservation at university, and has 20+ years of knitting experience.
