Fan Dancing with Greenwich Vietnamese Women’s Group
This creative workshop is a part of our ESEA community programme and is reserved for people of the East & Southeast Asian diaspora only.
Step into the beauty, rhythm, and resilience of Vietnamese culture this Lunar New Year with a special Traditional Fan Dancing Workshop led by the women of the Greenwich Vietnamese Women’s Group - the last remaining Vietnamese women’s group in the UK, founded by Vietnamese refugees and migrants who carried their traditions with them across oceans and generations.
Fan dancing is a graceful and powerful art form in Vietnamese culture. It tells stories of nature, femininity, celebration, and community, using flowing movements and the opening and closing of fans to express joy, harmony, and renewal - the very spirit of Tết.
In this welcoming, hands-on workshop, you will learn traditional fan dance movements directly from the women who have kept this cultural practice alive for decades. As you move together, you’ll also hear the stories behind the dances - how they were passed down through families, performed at festivals and weddings, and preserved by a community determined not to let its heritage fade.
This session is more than a dance class. It is a chance to connect across generations, honour the journeys of Vietnamese women in the UK, and celebrate the Lunar New Year through movement, music, and shared cultural pride. Whether you’re new to Vietnamese traditions or reconnecting with them, you’ll be welcomed into a space of learning, joy, and community.
