Library of Ancestral Knowledge: Preserving Memories with Handicrafts

This creative workshop is reserved for ESEA diaspora people.

Join resident ceramic artist Mai Anh Le in exploring diasporic and familial memories through the traditional handicrafts of weaving and imprinting, using clay and collected home objects.

This creative workshop explores making: How can we preserve memories of our cultural and ancestral heritage through handicrafts? Weaving and ceramics have a rich history in Vietnam that is deeply rooted in agricultural traditions. As we move through an evolving digital world, where do these crafts fit? Whose hands will continue these skills?

Part one: Weaving

In part one of this workshop, we will activate the ancient craft through a contemporary lens by using clay to weave with. Participants are invited to bring old containers that have been repurposed to hold something different from its origin. We will collectively share and preserve the stories behind these containers as we weave from them and create new vessels to store new memories in.

Part two: Imprinting

In part two, we will look at the way the spirit of DIY exists and influences our homes and spaces. What tools do we use that turn new and foreign places into a home? Do these items hold memory as well as purpose? Participants are invited to bring any tools, materials or utensils they rely on for DIY. We will share and preserve the memories behind these objects by imprinting their textures and surfaces onto clay, creating a collective map of tactile textures.

Whether you are new or experienced in handicrafts, let the intricate technique of weaving, imprinting and working with clay take you on a journey of meditative making, reflection and conversation.
